Biography:

Torsten Schöbel, M.A. / Art in Context, has been a lecturer for special tasks for Fundamentals of Digital Media in the European Media Studies program since 2008. He was an artistic assistant in the Department of Sculptural Design from 2003 to 2005 and in the Department of Visual Arts at the Technische Universität Berlin in the Architecture program from 2005 to 2008. From 2001 to 2012 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts, and in 2007 and 2009 he was a visiting professor for New Media at the Berlin University of the Arts in the Chinese-German Master's program in Fine Arts at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China. Torsten Schöbel studied art at the Kunstuniversität Linz, the Accademia di Belle Arti Bologna and at the Berlin University of the Arts. He completed academic correspondence courses in Modern Anthropology, Media and Communication Studies, Modern Art and 19th and 20th Century Literature. During his studies he was a staff member of Interflugs (Artists' Talks, now Lecture Series) at the Berlin University of the Arts and tutor with teaching duties for Intermediary Artistic Practice with Prof. Wolf Kahlen in the Department of Sculptural Design at the Technische Universität Berlin. In addition, he was a financial officer in the Austrian Student Union (ÖH) and in the General Student Committee (AStA) for several years. 1995 Performance scholarship of the Republic of Austria, Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. Prior to his university studies, he trained as a stone sculptor. He was awarded the State Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching (Landeslehrpreis für hervorragende Lehrtätigkeit) in 2020.
