Programming + ActionScript (Flash)
This course will start by giving students basic concepts of computer programming (variables, conditionals, loops, arrays, functions, etc.), which will be explained by using pen and paper and regular examples of our daily life. Problem definition, logic and program design will be relevant parts in this courses section. Later, students will implement these concepts by using ActionScript, the programming language of Flash. ActionScript syntax will be throughly explained. Also there will be discussions about Flash design, usability and website aesthetics. At the end of this course, students will be able to program simple interactive websites, basic flash games and presentations for CD or DVD-Format; students will also have the basic programming knowledge that will let them understand simple code written in other programming languages.

Beginning Interactive Multimedia
This course introduces the concepts, strategies, and techniques of interactive computer media. Students will have significant involvement with multimedia authoring tools for the experimentation with “hypermedia” formats involving video and photographic images stored on CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, sound, and text. Interactive multimedia production involves different objectives and methods than those common to the usual practices of video, film, and computer graphics. The author designs structured but flexible pathways to access image and sound information, and facilitates free navigation among these elements.

Procedural Drawing – Visualizing information with motion graphics
This BA level project course presents a selection of different techniques for generating drawing through processes. Pre-defined manual, automatic, and interactive processes will be used for the generation of static and motion graphics. Parameters for creating images will be either given by the programmer, like e.g. random numbers or mathematical algorithms, or information given by the user, like a text, a song, etc. Examples of similar existing works will be discussed and analyzed in the group.
Emphasis will be given to the experimental character of the course, therefore not only the final project will be evaluated but also the participation and engagement of students during the whole semester. The final project will consist of one or a series of different experiments utilizing the techniques learned in the course.
The main tool used during the semester will be ActionScript Flash but eventually MEL (Maya) will be employed. Additional tools, e.g. Photoshop and After Effects might be needed.
Priority to 4th semester students.

Phantasmatic, delirious, demonic - Dracula in the media

3-D Visualization
This MA level project course presents the basic techniques and aesthetics of the 3D software Maya, including modeling, lighting, rendering, and camera animation. Students will learn the full range of 3D visualization production of environments and objects, from drawing for 3D to final rendering, culminating in a completed project, e.g. the visualization of an exhibition, installation, sculpture, product, or a landscape. Concepts from photography, film (camera), and art are used as a grounding for exploration of the possibilities offered by the technology, with an emphasis in lighting and texturing.
It is recommended taking this course in combination with Prof. Winfried Gerling’s course „The Garden“ (Wednesday 13:30 – 16:30PM) as a way of visualizing the concepts in 3D.

Monsters, Myth, and Mutations | Traverso
This course combines both historical research and experimental investigation of transformational bodies in art, literature, science, and popular culture. During the semester students will lecture about different works of art (media) of their own interest. Students have the opportunity to do 3D creatures, video, documentary, etc. The development of the final group project, e.g. a book on DVD, a video, an exhibition, etc. will be part of the course’s assignment.

“Monsters, Myths, and Mutations” is a combination of three co-dependent courses that focuses the topic on different perspectives. It is recommended the participation of at least two of the courses.

Besides the weekly courses’ meetings, there will be excursions and intensive workshops.

This course is one of three co-dependent courses that will focus on the topics of "Monsters, Myths, and Mutations", covering them from different perspectives. Pr. Winfried Gerling, Sole Traverso and myself will be teaching "Monsters, Myths, and Mutations" the whole Thursday in a dynamic mixture of theory and praxis. Excursions and intensive workshops will be part of this course as well. For the courses' success, we strongly recommend taking all these three courses!
