The film Memoria de Guinea reveals one reality of the white life in a black country. Contrast, rupture, terms that describe the inevitable clash between two cultures so different. The colony and the metropolis, adults and children, dependency and independence… those are the subjects which I wonder about and explore. Black and white and color, motion and stillness, is the visual language I make use of to explain my own questions about two separate worlds in one place at the same time.
This life told by its protagonists, my family members, and revealed in hundreds of pictures, is a legacy that is being communicated to me and I fear for its disappearance. In an analysis about the complex land of memory, I offer a theoretical framework to my research to accompany the film. A framework, which aims to study how memory works once it exits its owner and is passed on.
