Words do not refer to contents they designate. At first, words do laterally refer to other words, says Emmanuel Levinas. The word »jazz« is no exception and laterally refers to other words like body, improvisation, rhythm, sound, and techniques. Language then refers to positions of the one that listens and the one that speaks, or, in jazz, to the one that plays an instrument like a piano. The Spring School aims to reflect on etymologies of jazz, stressing that meaning is situated in the ethical, generally before culture and also specifically before aesthetics. Jazz will be discussed qua expression, between language and music, meaning and sense, performativity and mediality, ethnicity and historicity.
