This bachelor’s thesis aims to bring the atmosphere as a carrier of environmental aesthetics into the analytical focus of media studies. The process, dependence, and interaction of these fields will be described. The resulting question of how atmospheres and media interact is to be explored. With the help of the handbook of media studies, it will be verified, whether the term atmosphere exists in the collection of terms or whether it should be integrated into the collection.

Initially, a connection between the terms atmosphere and medium will be defined. Further, the question will be evaluated whether the intermediate state of atmosphere identifies it as a medium or whether it is precisely for this reason that it represents an important subject for media studies. To explore this question the writings of Gernot Böhme, Hermann Schmitz, Peter Sloterdijk and the “Handbuch der Medienwissenschaft” (Engl.: “Handbook of Media Studies”) will be examined.
