Internationaler Gastvortrag | Dr. Orit Halpern

Dr. Orit Halpern (The New School, New York City, USA):

»The ›Smart‹ Mandate: Logistics, Biopolitics, and Urban Design circa 1970«

The paper will discuss the reformulation of both reason and cognition in cybernetics and its affiliated human sciences and design practices in the period between 1955 and 1975. It will unearth a genealogy of contemporary concerns with financialization, »smartness«, and logistics that is the infrastructure for contemporary investments in cloud computing, smart grids and cities, and algorithmic trading.

Orit Halpern is assistant professor at the New School for Social Research, Eugene Lang College in History and an affiliate in the Culture and Media Studies Department and in the Design Studies MA program at Parsons, the New School of Design. Her research focuses on histories of digital media, cybernetics, the human and social sciences, and art and design. Her book Beautiful Data: A History of Vision and Reason since 1945 is a history of »big data« and interactivity. Her published works and multimedia projects have appeared in multiple journals, books, and art spaces. One of her recent articles, »The Neural Network. Temporality, Rationality, and Affect in Cybernetics«, appeared in the collection Timing of Affect: Epistemologies, Aesthetics, Politics, edited by Marie-Luise Angerer, Bernd Bösel and Michaela Ott, Zürich/Berlin: diaphanes, 2014.
